Dearborn residents can learn the basics of rain garden development and care and earn a certification through two workshops hosted by the City of Dearborn in partnership with Friends of the Rouge. Registration is now open for the Master Rain Gardener Certification Course and Rain Garden 101 workshop at the Henry Ford Centennial Library, 16301 Michigan Ave.
The courses are part of the City’s larger efforts towards flood readiness and flood-related disaster recovery projects. The program aims to empower homeowners to turn their yards into functional, appealing landscapes that absorb stormwater, with downstream effects of reducing basement backups, and provide critical habitats for Michigan’s native pollinators.
Both programs emphasize hands-on experience, teaching participants successful strategies and how to avoid costly, common mistakes.
Regina Sistruck, Dearborn Community Development Coordinator, stated, “By using native Michigan plants to slow and filter rainwater before it reaches storm drains and the Rouge River, residents can make a tangible impact on environmental stewardship right from their own backyards. Residents can choose the educational track that best fits their schedule and goals.”
The courses offered include:
No previous gardening or design experience is necessary to join either program. Due to limited space in both programs, early registration is advised. Those interested can register with Friends of the Rouge by visiting Dearborn.gov
