Protecting families and preventing prescription drug misuse
National Prescription Drug Take Back Day provides an important opportunity for residents to remove potentially dangerous medications from their homes, helping prevent accidental poisonings, prescription drug misuse, and theft.
Unused prescription medications stored in household medicine cabinets can pose serious risks, particularly to children, older adults, and individuals who may misuse medications.
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's National Survey on Drug Use and Health, family members and friends remain significant sources of prescription medications obtained for misuse.
Proper disposal also helps protect the environment by discouraging unsafe disposal practices, including flushing medications down toilets or discarding them in household trash.
The Dearborn Police Department encourages residents to take a few minutes to check their medicine cabinets and safely dispose of medications that are expired or no longer needed.
