U.S. Army veteran Jim Pipitone has been named the City of Dearborn's 2026/2027 Veteran of the Year by previous recipients of the award. The City and the Dearborn Allied War Veterans Council (DAWVC) will honor him during Dearborn’s annual Veterans Day Ceremony on Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2026, at 11 a.m. at the Ford Community & Performing Arts Center, 15801 Michigan Ave.

Lifelong Dearborn resident Jim Pipitone is being recognized for his distinguished military service in the U.S. Army and his continuous leadership within the local veteran community.

A 1969 graduate of Fordson High School, Pipitone enlisted in the U.S. Army in September 1970. He served as a Hercules Missile Launcher Crewman stationed at a NATO base in Vicenza, Italy, earning the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal before his honorable discharge as Specialist Four (E-4) in April 1972.

Following his military discharge, Pipitone dedicated decades to supporting fellow service members and local charitable causes. His volunteer contributions range from organizing Stockings for Soldiers and Toys for Tots initiatives to coordinating fundraisers for Wounded Warriors and providing essential medical transportation for veterans.

Mayor Abdullah H. Hammoud stated, “Jim’s longtime commitment to service and advocacy for veterans has made a difference in our community. His initiatives and participation in local veteran and military organizations and projects have helped create a positive and supportive environment.”

Pipitone continues to hold active leadership roles, serving as Sergeant-at-Arms for American Legion Post 364 and Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 267, as well as Treasurer for the Legion Riders. In recognition of his enduring commitment, the American Legion awarded him an Honorary Life Membership in 2023.
