The City of Dearborn is creating its first Arts & Culture Commission, an advisory board dedicated to promoting and advocating for arts and culture within Dearborn.
The commission, which is the first new city commission established from ordinance since the early 2000s, was adopted by the City Council on Jan. 27, 2026. The Arts & Culture Commission consists of nine Dearborn residents: seven voting members and two non-voting student advisors. Its primary purpose is to advise the administration and City Council by making recommendations for community cultural activities.
These responsibilities include supporting public/private arts partnerships, assisting with public art, recognizing contributors through the Mayor's Arts Awards, collaborating with City departments, promoting public awareness, encouraging diverse art forms (visual arts, drama, music, dance, historical heritage, and humanities), and supporting arts education.
Mayor Abdullah H. Hammoud stated, "The establishment of this commission shows our dedication to celebrating Dearborn’s creativity, diversity, and talent. Bringing together artists, cultural leaders, and residents, the commission will strengthen neighborhood identity, support local talent, and ensure the arts remain vital to the future of our community."
The first appointed members are: Harout Bastajian, Karen Holland, Kobie Solomon, and Wendy Sample.
The City is seeking applicants for the two non-voting student advisor seats. Students interested in applying for the Arts & Culture Commission may apply through the City's boards and commissions application at Dearborn.gov/BoardsCommissions.
